Crappie Fishing Spots

There are numerous crappie fishing spots located twenty minutes to 3 hours from my home in Memphis Tennessee. Like I mentioned earlier on another page, the Midsouth area is blessed to have so many lakes to do some serious crappie fishing. The current record crappie was caught at Enid Lake in Mississippi.

Tennessee Lakes:

Kentucky Lake(south), Old Hickory, J.Percy Priest, Pick Wick, Center Hill, Cordell Hull, Lake Barkley, Herb Parsons, Dale Hollow, Gibson Country Lake

Mississippi Lakes and Reservoirs:

Ross Barnett Reservoir

District 1

Tombigbee Water Way, Lake Monroe, Aberdean, Bay Springs, Columbus, Lake Lamar Bruce, J.P. Coleman/Pick Wick

District 2 and these are my favorites:

Sardis, Enid, Arkabutla, Grenda, Horn Lake, Flower Lake, Desoto Lake, Tunica Cutoff

Heading Out To Your Favorite Crappie Fishing Spots?

If at all possible, call or check with the local Wildlife office to see what the Lake stages are and if they are low (which they have been for the past two years) to find out what boat ramp is open to launch your boat.

All the lakes that I have listed above are some good crappie fishing spots along with other fish that I will mention later on in articles as they start to bite.

The lakes listed above are great to fish but if time is short and you want to fish; I know personally that the local (Cow ponds) or small lakes around or close to your house can be just as much fun trying to out smart mister large mouth.

Creel Limits and Size

Most lakes post what we call creel limits and size. Stick to it Mississippi this year has dropped crappie from 30 to 20 per person.

Tennessee last year came up with a law stating the Bass that you keep must be at least 15 inches long. I saw a Game Warden handing out tickets for fish that were too short and tickets for too many fish that were kept.

I know that for a fact every crappie over 20 will cost you $150.00 per fish, and no, it was not me.

Think Safety: Let Someone Know

A couple of thing to remember: If someone is not going with you, always let someone know where you are going and what time you should return.

Fishing and Water Temperatures

Small lakes and ponds and lakes turn faster than the big reservoirs do. What I mean is the water temperature will warm up faster and the fish will start bitting sooner.

Water temperatures do affect fishing: Crappie like 50 to 65 degree water, Bass are most active in 65 to 75 degree water, Bream 73 to 85 degree water, and Catfish like 68 to 90 degree water.

Fishing Private Lakes and Ponds

If you find a lake in your area that is owned by a land owner sometimes if you're real nice and explain to him you would like to be able to fish his lake in return for helping him with the up keep of the lake they will let you.

Ask him then if he wants you to return the fish that you catch back to the lake, or remove a few small ones for supper that night, even go as far as to offer the land owner if he would like some fish that you catch and clean for him.

A little kindness can go along way. Always respect his wishes and never leave any trash when you're done and that includes fishing line. I can not tell you how many times I have walked around a lake and get all tangled up in someone's mess that they have left on the ground.

I carry a small kitchen bag with me to pick up the trash as I come up on it. Believe me, the land owner will be watching you and that alone impresses the land owner.

One rule to stick with if he will give you a written permission slip that is for you and you only to fish his lake, don't show up with your whole neighborhood the next day to fish.
